THE
ARMY WINTER SPORTS ASSOCIATION
The AWSA was founded in 1947 by Field Marshall Montgomery to help provide a break from routine repetitive training and operations in the immediate post-war years. Since then it has encouraged generations of Army servicemen and women to take to snow and ice, often for the first time in their lives. It has been instrumental in the organising of competitions from novice to the highest levels of proficiency. Many of its members have gone on to represent the Army and their country at successive winter Olympic games. Its aim today remains as important as it was in 1947; to encourage young men and women to participate in winter sports, to develop their skills in their chosen discipline, and to test themselves in demanding conditions - thereby fostering self discipline, physical courage and team work. The Association remains at the centre of Army winter sport as it brings on the next generation of Army winter sportsmen and women.
